The ARC's History
While The Arc of the United States was established 50 years ago (1949), ARC Sarpy County wasn't formally established until 1982.
For several years prior to 1982, participating county residents were members of GOARC (Greater Omaha Association for Retarded Citizens) which provided
advocacy and other services to Sarpy residents. Eventually, Sarpy residents began meeting and conducting activities separately; then, in 1982, ten members
living in Sarpy County formed their own Chapter. Memberships grew to a high of 125 disabled persons, parents, siblings, relatives, care givers, professionals
and public officials. Current membership is 100.
ARC Sarpy has participated each year, in November, in the state-wide Honey Sunday project. This is our primary fund-raising event with most of the effort
being a door-to-door offering of honey bear bottles of honey by numerous volunteers, mostly teen-agers.
The Chapter's annual operating budget has grown to the current level of $13,000 (plus the cost of honey).
The Chapter's participation in the affairs of The Arc of Nebraska is exemplified by the election of two members as President of that organization in 1983 and 2000.
ARC Sarpy is registered as a Nebraska non-profit corporation. It holds a 501c 3 exemption determination from the Internal Revenue Service.
